Cupid Word Search
Cupid is the Roman god of desire, and this word search follows him through forty words: his Greek name Eros, his mother Venus, the bow and the quiver, the arrows of gold and lead, the blindfold, and Psyche, the mortal he fell in love with.
The two kinds of arrow come from Ovid. In the Metamorphoses, Apollo laughs at the boy for carrying a grown man's weapon, so Cupid shoots him with a golden arrow, which makes him fall in love, and shoots the nymph Daphne with a lead one, which makes her run. To escape Apollo she turns into a laurel tree, and he takes its leaves for his crown, which is why the winners of the Pythian Games at Delphi were crowned with laurel.
The story of Psyche is told by Apuleius in the second century. Cupid hides her in a palace, visits only in the dark, and forbids her to look at him. One night she lights a lamp, a drop of hot oil falls on his shoulder, and he flies away. After a set of impossible tasks from Venus, Jupiter gives her ambrosia and makes her immortal. Her name is the Greek word for soul, and also for butterfly.
