The five skills most school SEL programs teach come from CASEL, a group founded in Chicago in 1994: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. The growth mindset idea is newer, from the psychologist Carol Dweck, whose 2006 book Mindset showed that students who believe ability can grow with effort keep working after a setback.
