SMART goals come from a one-page article. George Doran, a consultant in Spokane, Washington, published it in the November 1981 issue of Management Review, and his letters stood for Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic and Time-related. Teachers and coaches later swapped in Achievable and Relevant, and that is the version most students learn today.
The research behind it is older. In 1968 the psychologist Edwin Locke reported that people given a specific, hard goal did better than people told simply to do their best, and dozens of later studies found the same thing. Locke and Gary Latham added two conditions: the person has to accept the goal, and they need regular feedback on how close they are, which is why a checklist or a progress chart helps.
