Growth Mindset Word Search
This growth mindset word search is built around one small word, yet: a fixed mindset against a growth one, practice and feedback, the mistake and the setback, grit and the will to persevere, and the neuron that changes as you learn.
The terms come from Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford, who explained them in her 2006 book Mindset. In a 1998 study she and Claudia Mueller gave fifth graders a set of puzzles and then praised half of them for being smart and half for working hard. Offered a choice of what to try next, most of the children praised for effort picked a harder set, while most of those praised for being smart picked an easy one they knew they could pass.
The brain really does change with practice. London taxi drivers spend years memorizing about 25,000 streets for a test called the Knowledge, and in 2000 the scientist Eleanor Maguire found that the back of the hippocampus, a part of the brain used for finding your way, was larger in drivers than in other people, and larger still in those who had driven the longest. Angela Duckworth later gave the name grit to the passion and perseverance that keep people working toward long goals.
