This positive affirmations word search fills in the blank after "I am": strong, capable, worthy, enough, loved, unique and resilient, along with the mirror and the sticky note where people write them and say them out loud.
An affirmation works best in the present tense and in the first person. "I am ready for this test" is the form, rather than "I will be ready" or "you can do it," because the sentence is meant to be something you say to yourself as already true. The French pharmacist Emile Coue made the idea famous in the early 1920s with one line his patients repeated twenty times each morning: every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.
Scientists began testing it later. In 1988 the psychologist Claude Steele described self-affirmation theory: when people stop to name a value that matters to them, such as family, music or kindness, they handle criticism and stress with less defensiveness. In a 2006 study of seventh graders, a few short writing exercises like this at the start of the year narrowed the grade gap between groups of students by the end of the term.
