Melancholy is a medical theory that outlived its own medicine. Greek physicians held that the body ran on four humors, and an excess of one of them, melan chole or black bile, produced the settled sadness the word still names. The bile does not exist, the theory was abandoned centuries ago, and the word is now the most precise one English has for that particular mood.

Naming feelings turns out to be the useful part. Psychologists call it affect labelling, and studies going back to the 2000s have found that putting a specific word to a strong feeling measurably reduces its intensity, which is why the list here reaches past happy and sad to apprehensive, resentful and disheartened. A wider vocabulary is a finer instrument.
