Respect Word Search
This respect word search covers how people show they value each other: dignity and fairness, privacy and consent, respect for elders and teachers, fair play in a game, the golden rule, and the song Aretha Franklin made famous by spelling the word out.
The word comes from the Latin respicere, to look back at or look again. To respect someone, in its first sense, was to stop and take a second look instead of passing them by. The golden rule shows up in many old traditions. In the Analects, Confucius gives it as: what you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others, and very similar lines appear in Jewish, Christian and Islamic teaching.
The song had two lives. Otis Redding wrote Respect and released it in 1965 as a plea from a tired husband. Aretha Franklin recorded it in 1967 and turned it around, adding the spelled-out R E S P E C T and the line sock it to me, which her sisters Carolyn and Erma sang behind her. Her version went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, won two Grammy Awards, and became an anthem of the civil rights and women's movements.
