This May word search has forty words for the month the school year winds down: field day, graduation, the maypole, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day and a thank-you to the teacher. It is free to print, or you can play it online.
May Day, on the first, is the old spring festival, with ribbons wound around a maypole and small baskets of flowers left on neighbors' doorsteps, a custom common in American towns well into the last century. Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican army's win over French troops at Puebla in 1862, and it is a far bigger party in the United States than in most of Mexico.
Teacher Appreciation Week comes in the first full week and Mother's Day on the second Sunday. The Kentucky Derby has been run every year since 1875 and now goes off on the first Saturday of the month. Memorial Day closes things out on the last Monday, when a red poppy is worn for the soldiers who died in service. The custom comes from the poem In Flanders Fields.
