January is named for Janus, the Roman god of doorways, who was carved with two faces so he could look back at the old year and ahead to the new one. That is the whole idea behind a resolution. The habit is ancient: the Babylonians made promises to their gods at each new year, most of them about paying back debts and returning borrowed tools.
It is also the coldest month across most of the country. A woodchuck that went to hibernate in the fall has slowed its heart to a handful of beats a minute by now. On the third Monday, schools mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which Congress named a national day of service in 1994; the dream on this list comes from his 1963 speech in Washington. The 29th is National Puzzle Day.
