The dog days are named after a star. The Greeks and Romans noticed that Sirius, the Dog Star, rose with the sun during the hottest stretch of summer, and they blamed the heat on it. The sound of those weeks is the cicadas in the trees and the crickets after dark. A cricket chirps faster as the air warms, closely enough that you can estimate the temperature by counting.
In the middle of the month the Perseids reach their peak, the best meteor shower of the year for most people because it comes on warm nights. Late summer is fair season too, and the first Ferris wheel was built for the Chicago world's fair of 1893, to give America an answer to the Eiffel Tower. By the end of the month the backpack and crayons are out again.
