The name most likely comes from the Latin aperire, to open, which is what the buds are doing. The showers are real enough. Spring storms form where warm air from the south meets cold air still coming down from the north. Earth Day follows the same idea on the 22nd, and April is National Poetry Month as well, which is why poetry made the list.
