John Adams expected July 2 to be the date Americans celebrated, and he wrote that it should be marked with pomp and parade, games, bonfires and illuminations. He had everything right but the day.
Apollo 11 set Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin down on the Moon on July 20, 1969, and an estimated 600 million people watched it on television. July is also National Ice Cream Month, named by President Reagan in 1984. The heat that comes with it is why the list ends at the lake, in a canoe or at summer camp.
