Lunar New Year Word Search

Forty words for the new year that starts with a new moon: red envelope gifts of money, the lion dance and the dragon, firecrackers and fireworks, dumplings, long noodles, oranges for good luck, and the twelve animals of the zodiac, from the rat and the ox to the dog and the pig.

The date follows the lunisolar calendar, so it falls between January 21 and February 20. In China the holiday is called the Spring Festival, and it ends fifteen days later with the Lantern Festival. Families travel home for a reunion dinner, clean the house before the new year to sweep out bad luck, and hang red couplets beside the door. Vietnam celebrates Tet, and Korea Seollal.

Legend tells of Nian, a beast that came out at the new year and was afraid of the color red and of loud noise, which is why there is so much of both. 2026 is the Year of the Horse, beginning on February 17, and 2027 is the Year of the Goat. Many dishes are puns: the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus, so a whole fish is served and some is left over.
