Mardi Gras Word Search
Forty Mardi Gras words from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast: Fat Tuesday, the king cake with a plastic baby inside, beads, masks and a doubloon thrown from each float, the krewe that rides it, the Zulu coconut, and beignets in the French Quarter.
The French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville reached a spot near the mouth of the Mississippi on Mardi Gras day in 1699 and named it Point du Mardi Gras. Mobile, Alabama held organized celebrations in the early 1700s and claims the oldest Mardi Gras in the United States; there the favorite throw is a Moon Pie. The day always falls between February 3 and March 9, because it comes right before Ash Wednesday and so moves with Easter.
In New Orleans the Mistick Krewe of Comus staged the first themed night parade in 1857, lit by flambeaux, torch carriers who still walk ahead of some floats. The Rex organization picked purple, green and gold in 1872, and Rex is still crowned king of carnival. The Zulu club's hand-painted coconuts are the most prized throw of all. King cake season opens on January 6, and whoever finds the baby in a slice is expected to bring the next cake.
