Cinco de Mayo Word Search

Forty words for Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May: the Battle of Puebla, General Zaragoza and President Juarez, the French army of Napoleon III, and the mariachi, the folklorico dancers, the churros and the mole poblano of the celebration.

On May 5, 1862, a Mexican army under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated a larger and better equipped French force outside the city of Puebla. France had invaded after President Benito Juarez stopped paying Mexico's foreign debts in 1861. The French attacked uphill against the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe and were driven back. They returned with more troops, took Mexico City in 1863 and were not gone until 1867.

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, which is September 16 and marks Father Miguel Hidalgo's call to revolt in 1810. In Mexico the date is celebrated mostly in Puebla, with parades and reenactments of the battle. It grew much bigger in the United States, where Mexican American communities and Chicano activists of the 1960s took it up as a celebration of heritage. Zaragoza himself was born in 1829 in Goliad, in what is now Texas.
