Diwali Word Search
Forty words for Diwali, the festival of lights: the clay diya filled with ghee, rangoli patterns at the door, sparklers and fireworks, mithai sweets such as ladoo and jalebi, and the stories of Rama, Sita and Lakshmi.
The name comes from the Sanskrit Deepavali, a row of lamps. The festival falls on the new moon, amavasya, of the month of Kartik, in October or November, and is kept over five days, from Dhanteras, when families buy gold or new pots, to Bhai Dooj, a day for brothers and sisters. In many homes Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good fortune, is worshipped on the main night, and doors and windows are left lit to welcome her.
In northern India the lamps recall Rama's return to Ayodhya with Sita and his brother Lakshman after fourteen years of exile and the defeat of the demon king Ravana. Sikhs mark the same day as Bandi Chhor Divas, the release of Guru Hargobind from prison, and light up the Golden Temple in Amritsar. For Jains it is the day Mahavira, the last of their great teachers, reached nirvana.
