Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which follows the moon, so it begins about eleven days earlier each year and passes through every season in roughly 33 years. It starts when the new crescent is sighted and lasts 29 or 30 days. Fasting, or sawm, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam: from dawn to sunset adults go without food or drink, while children, the sick and travelers are excused.
Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in Ramadan, on Laylat al Qadr, the Night of Power, in the last ten nights of the month. Many break the fast with dates and water, as the Prophet did. In Egypt children carry fanous lanterns, and in some towns a musaharati walks the streets before dawn beating a drum to wake people for suhoor. Before the Eid prayer each family gives zakat al fitr to the poor.
