Purim Word Search

Forty words for Purim and the story in the Book of Esther: Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai, the villain Haman, King Ahasuerus of Persia, the Megillah scroll, the grogger that drowns out Haman's name, costumes, and three-cornered cookies with poppyseed filling.

The story is set in Shushan, the Persian capital, where the king's adviser Haman plots to destroy the Jews and casts lots, pur in the original, to choose the day, which gives the holiday its name. Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah, risks her life by going to the king without being summoned, and the plot is turned back on Haman. The Book of Esther never mentions God by name, a rare thing in the Hebrew Bible.

Purim falls on the 14th of Adar, in February or March, and a day later in Jerusalem, a walled city like Shushan. The Megillah is read aloud twice, in the evening and again in the morning. Four customs mark the day: hearing the Megillah, sending mishloach manot, gifts of food, to friends, giving to the poor, and a festive meal called the seudah. The triangle pastries are hamantaschen, Yiddish for Haman's pockets.
