Day of the Dead Word Search

The holiday blends the ways the Aztecs and other peoples of Mexico honored their dead with the Catholic feasts of All Saints and All Souls. November 1 is often set aside for children who have died, the angelitos, and November 2 for adults. Families clean and decorate the graves, and at home they build an ofrenda with photos of the dead and the food and drink they loved, along with water and salt for the spirits after their long walk back.
Marigold petals, with their strong scent and bright color, are laid in paths to guide the souls home. The Catrina began as an etching of around 1910 by the printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada, mocking Mexicans who copied European fashions, and Diego Rivera gave her a full-length place in a mural of 1947. UNESCO added the celebration to its list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008.
