Labor Day, on the first Monday, grew out of a parade of workers in New York City in 1882 and became a federal holiday in 1894. For most families it is the real end of summer, and in much of the Northeast it is the last day before the homework starts. The Sunday after it is Grandparents Day, and Constitution Day on the 17th marks the signing in Philadelphia in 1787.
The harvest moon is the full moon nearest the equinox, and for a few nights running it rises soon after sunset, which gave farmers extra light to bring the crop in. The apples are ready now too. Honeycrisp came out of a University of Minnesota breeding program in 1991, and the monarchs are starting their long flight south to the mountains of Mexico.
