The parts of speech in English textbooks come from the grammars of Greek and Latin, which is why English was described for centuries with categories built for other languages. Dionysius Thrax, writing in Greek around 100 BC, listed eight parts, though his eight were not quite the modern ones: he had the participle and the article, and no adjective.
