Opposites Word Search
This opposites word search holds twenty pairs of antonyms, forty words in all: hot and cold, push and pull, asleep and awake, thick and thin, and early and late.
Antonym comes from Greek anti, against, and onyma, name. Linguists sort opposites into kinds. Gradable pairs like hot and cold have a scale between them, so water can be warm or cool. Complementary pairs like win and lose leave no middle ground: a game you did not lose, you won or tied. Relational pairs like above and below, or push and pull, describe the same situation from opposite sides.
The word antonym is newer than you might guess. C. J. Smith coined it in 1867 in his book Synonyms and Antonyms, building it on the much older word synonym. Some words are their own opposites. Sanction can mean to allow or to punish, dust can mean to add dust or to wipe it off, and to clip can mean to attach or to cut away. Linguists call these contronyms.
