Parts of Speech Word Search
This parts of speech word search names all eight parts taught in English class, pronoun, adverb, adjective, preposition, conjunction and interjection among them, with proper noun, action verb and linking verb standing in for the two biggest families, and an example or two of each.
A word's part of speech depends on its job in the sentence, not on the word itself. Run is a verb in "we run home" and a noun in "a long run." Nouns name a person, place, thing or idea; pronouns stand in for them; verbs show action or a state of being. Adjectives describe nouns, and adverbs modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Prepositions show how one thing relates to another, conjunctions such as because join ideas, and interjections like wow and ouch exclaim.
Donatus, a Roman teacher of the 300s, wrote the Latin grammar that schools copied for a thousand years, and his eight parts had the participle where English now has the adjective. Lindley Murray's English Grammar of 1795 counted nine by giving the article its own place. Most textbooks now fold articles into adjectives, while linguists file them, with words like every and those, as determiners.
