This prepositions word search packs in forty of the small words that show where, when and which way: above, below, beneath, between, across, during, until, toward, despite and without.
A preposition links a noun or pronoun, called its object, to the rest of the sentence. In "the cat slept under the porch," under the porch is a prepositional phrase that tells where. Teachers often use a box to test for them: a mouse can go into the box, around it, through it, behind it or beside it, and almost every word that fits that test is a preposition.
The old rule against ending a sentence with a preposition goes back to John Dryden, who in 1672 faulted Ben Jonson for it, probably because a Latin sentence cannot end that way. Most grammar guides now ignore the rule, since "what are you looking at?" is plain English. Toward and towards are both correct; American writers usually drop the s, and British writers keep it.
