US Government Word Search

This US Government puzzle covers how the federal system runs from day to day: the Capitol and the White House, the Cabinet and each department and agency, the budget and taxes, the filibuster in the Senate, and the governor and mayor closer to home.

Congress created the first executive departments in 1789: State, Treasury and War, each led by a secretary who advised President Washington. Today there are fifteen, and the newest, Homeland Security, dates from 2002. The heads of those departments and the vice president make up the Cabinet. John Adams was the first president to live in the White House, moving in during November 1800 while the building was still unfinished.

The federal fiscal year begins on October 1, so Congress has to pass its spending bills by the end of September or agree on a stopgap to keep the government open. In the Senate a filibuster can hold up most bills unless sixty senators vote to end the debate. The Capitol dome, made of cast iron, was finished in 1866, after work on it had gone on all through the Civil War.
