Bill of Rights Word Search

This Bill of Rights puzzle holds the first ten amendments in their own words: freedom of speech, religion and the press, a warrant before a search, due process, a jury trial, reasonable bail, and no cruel and unusual punishment.

Several states agreed to ratify the Constitution only on the promise that a list of rights would be added. James Madison introduced amendments in the first Congress in June 1789, and Congress sent twelve to the states. Ten were ratified by December 15, 1791, the date now kept as Bill of Rights Day. One of the two left over finally passed in 1992 as the 27th Amendment, about the pay of members of Congress.

The Fourth Amendment protects against unreasonable search and seizure and requires probable cause for a warrant. The Fifth bars double jeopardy, being tried twice for the same crime, and says no one can be forced to be a witness against himself. The Sixth promises a speedy and public trial with counsel, while the Third, on quartering soldiers in private homes, has almost never come before the Supreme Court.
