Military Word Search
This military puzzle holds the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force, the Space Force and the Coast Guard, the ranks from private to general and admiral, and the barracks, the boot camp and the reveille of a recruit's first weeks.
The Continental Congress created the Army on June 14, 1775, the Navy on October 13 and the Marines on November 10 of the same year. The Air Force became a separate branch in 1947, and the Space Force, set up in December 2019, became the sixth. The Military Academy at West Point opened in 1802 and the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845, and both still train officers in uniform today.
Some of the words have long stories. Colonel is spelled from the Italian colonnello, the leader of a column, but pronounced kernel from the old French form coronel. Reveille comes from the French word for wake up and is played on a bugle at dawn. Taps, the slow call played at the end of the day and at military funerals, was arranged in 1862 by the Union general Daniel Butterfield at a camp in Virginia.
