Civics Word Search

Forty civics words about being a citizen: the ballot and the vote, the candidate and the campaign, jury duty, the town hall and the school board, the petition and the protest, and the pledge of allegiance said at the start of the school day.

The word civics comes from the Latin civis, citizen. The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy for a magazine marking the 400th anniversary of the landing of Columbus; the words under God were added in 1954. In 1845 Congress set Election Day as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, for a farming country where the trip to the polls could take a day.

The right to vote has grown over time. The 15th Amendment, in 1870, barred states from denying it because of race, the 19th, in 1920, extended it to women, and the 26th, in 1971, lowered the voting age to 18. Immigrants become citizens through naturalization: they pass an English test and a civics test, then take an oath of allegiance at a ceremony, often held in a courthouse.
