Schools give part of the month to two weeks with their own history. Fire Prevention Week is set around October 9 because the Great Chicago Fire was burning on that date in 1871. Red Ribbon Week comes at the end of the month; it began after a federal agent, Enrique Camarena, was killed in 1985, and it is why so many classroom doors carry a ribbon in late October.
The rest belongs to the farm stand. The first big corn maze was cut into a Pennsylvania field in 1993, candy corn has been made since the 1880s, and gourds are hard-shelled cousins of the pumpkin that dry out and last for months on a porch. Baseball still has one more round to play, too: the World Series runs in the last week.
