Jonah and the Whale Word Search
This Jonah and the Whale word search tells the four-chapter book: the prophet sent to Nineveh who sailed for Tarshish instead, the storm, the sailors casting lots, the great fish, three days in its belly, the city in sackcloth and the plant and the worm.
Jonah, son of Amittai, boarded a ship at Joppa, the port that is now part of Tel Aviv, and paid the fare to Tarshish, usually placed in southern Spain, about as far west as a ship could go. Nineveh lay the other way, on the Tigris in Assyria, near modern Mosul in Iraq. He slept through the storm until the captain woke him, admitted the fault when the lot fell on him, and asked to be thrown overboard; the sea went calm at once.
The book never says whale; the Hebrew says a great fish, prepared by God, and Jonah's prayer from inside it fills chapter two. Spat out on the shore, he walked into Nineveh with a message of a single sentence, and the king ordered everyone, cattle included, to fast and wear sackcloth and ashes. Jonah sat east of the city, angry that God had shown mercy, under a plant that grew up overnight and died the next day when a worm ate it. The book ends on God's question about a city of more than 120,000 people.
