Budgeting Word Search

This budgeting word search holds the words of a monthly plan: income and expense, fixed and variable costs, needs and wants, the envelope and the spreadsheet, and the surplus or shortfall at the end of the month.

Budget began as a bag. The word comes from the Old French bougette, a small leather purse, and in Britain the Chancellor of the Exchequer was said to open the budget when he took out his papers and laid the year's taxes and spending before Parliament. The Chancellor still holds up a red box outside Downing Street on budget day.

A common starting rule splits take home pay 50, 30 and 20: half for needs, 30 percent for wants, and 20 percent for savings and paying down debt. Elizabeth Warren and her daughter Amelia Warren Tyagi set it out in their 2005 book All Your Worth. The older envelope method is simpler still: the cash for each category goes in its own envelope, and when the grocery envelope is empty, the grocery shopping stops.
