Money Word Search
This money word search covers the coins and bills in an American pocket, the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, the faces on them from Lincoln to Franklin, and what you do with money: earn, spend and save.
Coins and bills come from two different places. The United States Mint, set up by the Coinage Act of 1792 in Philadelphia, strikes the coins, while paper money is printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. That paper is not paper at all but a blend of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen, which is why a bill can survive a trip through the washing machine when a sheet of notebook paper cannot.
Lincoln went onto the penny in 1909, a hundred years after his birth, and it was the first regular American coin with a real person's portrait on it. Before coins, many trades ran on barter, or on goods everyone agreed to accept: cowrie shells across Africa and Asia, and wampum, beads cut from shell, among the peoples of the American northeast.
