Self service shopping is newer than it seems. Before 1916 a clerk fetched everything from behind the counter; that year Clarence Saunders opened the first Piggly Wiggly in Memphis and let customers take goods off the shelves themselves. The shopping cart came in 1937, when Sylvan Goldman, who ran grocery stores in Oklahoma City, put two baskets on a folding chair with wheels.
The first product scanned at a checkout by its barcode was a pack of Juicy Fruit gum, at a supermarket in Troy, Ohio, on June 26, 1974. Southdale Center, which opened outside Minneapolis in 1956, was the first fully enclosed shopping mall in America. Shopping from home is older than either: in 1872 Aaron Montgomery Ward mailed a single sheet price list to farm families, usually counted as the first mail order catalog.
