This December word search has forty words for the holidays and the start of winter: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, gingerbread, nutcracker and the winter solstice. Free to print as a PDF, or play it online.
Hanukkah lasts eight nights, with one more candle lit on the menorah each evening, and its date moves because it follows the Hebrew calendar. Kwanzaa runs from the day after Christmas to New Year's Day; Maulana Karenga created it in 1966, and its seven candles stand in a holder called a kinara.
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker opened in St. Petersburg in 1892 to poor reviews and only became a holiday habit here after the San Francisco Ballet staged the first full American production in 1944. The poinsettia is named for Joel Poinsett, the first American minister to Mexico, who sent cuttings home to South Carolina. National Poinsettia Day on the 12th is the date he died.
