Puzzles for the church year and the Christian faith: the Catholic Church with its Pope, parishes and sacraments, Ash Wednesday and the ashes, Holy Week day by day, Good Friday, the Ascension forty days after Easter, the saints and their symbols, the angels of the Bible and the words of prayer, with Advent, Lent, Pentecost and baptism alongside them.
The church year begins not in January but on the first Sunday of Advent, four Sundays before Christmas, and turns on two fixed points: Christmas on December 25 and Easter on a Sunday that moves with the moon. Everything from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost is counted backward or forward from Easter, which is why those feasts land on different dates every year while the saints keep the same days.
