Catholic comes from the Greek katholikos, universal, a word Ignatius of Antioch used for the church around the year 110. About 1.4 billion people belong to it today, more than half of all Christians. The Pope is the bishop of Rome and, by the church's teaching, the successor of Peter; he lives in Vatican City, the smallest country in the world at about 110 acres, created by a treaty with Italy in 1929. When a pope dies or resigns, the cardinals under eighty lock themselves in the Sistine Chapel for a conclave and signal a result with white smoke.
The seven sacraments are baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, penance, anointing of the sick, holy orders and matrimony. The Mass was said in Latin everywhere until the Second Vatican Council of 1962 to 1965 allowed local languages. A rosary has 59 beads, counted through five decades of ten Hail Marys each, and a novena is a prayer repeated for nine days. The church year runs from Advent through Lent and Easter, and its calendar of saints gives nearly every day of the year a name.
