Ash Wednesday Word Search
This Ash Wednesday word search holds forty words from the first day of Lent: the ashes made from last year's burned palms, the cross traced on the forehead, fasting, Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras the day before, and the forty days that follow.
Ash Wednesday falls 46 days before Easter, anywhere from February 4 to March 10, because the six Sundays of Lent are not counted in the forty. The ashes come from the palm fronds blessed on the previous Palm Sunday, burned and mixed with a little holy water or olive oil. The priest or minister presses them onto each forehead with a thumb, saying "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return," a line from Genesis, or "Repent, and believe in the Gospel." The readings that day include the prophet Joel's call to rend your hearts and not your garments, and Psalm 51.
Catholics between 18 and 59 eat only one full meal that day and skip meat, a rule that also holds on every Friday of Lent. Many people also choose something to give up until Easter, from chocolate to television, and some add a daily prayer or a promise instead. The day before is Shrove Tuesday, when households once used up their eggs and butter in pancakes before the fast. The ashes are not washed off but worn through the day, which makes them the one mark of a church service most people see on the street.
