This Lent word search holds forty words from the forty days before Easter: Ash Wednesday and the ashes, fasting, prayer and almsgiving, Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras, the wilderness, Holy Week and Good Friday.
Lent recalls the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness, where the Gospels say he was tempted by the devil. In Western churches it begins on Ash Wednesday, and the six Sundays are not counted, which is why Lent runs 46 days on the calendar. The ashes put on foreheads that day are made by burning the palm branches from the year before, often with the words remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. The name comes from the Old English lencten, spring, the season when the days lengthen.
Shrove Tuesday, the day before, takes its name from shrive, an old word for hearing confession. Families used up their eggs, butter and fat before the fast, which made it Pancake Day in Britain and Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, in New Orleans. Catholics still give up meat on the Fridays of Lent, which is why fish fries fill church halls in spring, and pretzels, said to be shaped like arms crossed in prayer, were a Lenten bread in parts of Europe for centuries.
