Angels Word Search

This angels word search gathers the angels of the Bible: the archangels Gabriel, Michael and Raphael, the six-winged seraphim and the cherubim at the gate of Eden, the Annunciation to Mary, the shepherds near Bethlehem, the empty tomb and the guardian angel.

Angel comes from the Greek angelos, messenger, which is what most of them do. Gabriel explains a vision to Daniel and, in Luke, tells Zechariah he will have a son and Mary that she will bear Jesus. Michael fights for Israel in Daniel and fights the dragon in Revelation. Raphael, in the book of Tobit, walks with young Tobias to Media and back. Only the seraphim of Isaiah's vision and the cherubim who guard Eden with a flaming sword are described with wings; the rest appear as men, and the halo was added by painters in the fourth century.

Angels turn up at the turning points of the Bible: on the ladder Jacob sees at Bethel, at Abraham's tent and over Isaac on the mountain, beside Hagar in the desert, blocking Balaam's donkey on the road, shutting the lions' mouths for Daniel, feeding Elijah under a broom tree, and unlocking Peter's prison in Acts. An angel tells Joseph in a dream to take Mary as his wife, a host of them sings to the shepherds with the words fear not, and two sit in the empty tomb on Easter morning. Michaelmas, the feast of Michael and all angels, falls on September 29.
