This prayer word search holds forty words for talking to God: the Our Father, grace before meals, amen, a hymn, the four kinds of prayer, adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication, the Psalms, and the rosary with its beads.
The Our Father is the prayer Jesus gave his disciples in Matthew 6, and most English speakers still say it in the words of William Tyndale's 1526 translation: hallowed be thy name, give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our trespasses. Amen is Hebrew for so be it. Grace at meals takes its name from the Latin gratia, thanks, and the Psalms, 150 songs in the middle of the Bible, were the prayer book of the Temple and are still sung through every week in monasteries, from Matins before dawn to Vespers at sunset.
Sunday-school teachers sort prayer into four kinds with the letters ACTS: adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication, which means asking. A litany is a list of short petitions with the same answer repeated, a novena a prayer said for nine days, and the rosary a string of beads for counting the Hail Marys. Folded hands and bent knees are old gestures of a servant before a lord. The bedtime rhyme "Now I lay me down to sleep" was printed in the New England Primer, the schoolbook of colonial America, in the 1700s.
