Winter Sports Word Search
This winter sports word search holds the games of snow and ice: skiing and snowboarding, the bobsled, luge and skeleton run, curling stones, the biathlon of skis and rifles, figure skating, speed skating and the jumps of the halfpipe.
The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924, with events including ski jumping, bobsled and a military patrol race that grew into the biathlon. Lake Placid, New York, hosted the Games twice, in 1932 and 1980; the second time a team of American college players beat the Soviet Union at hockey in the game called the Miracle on Ice.
Many skating jumps are named for the skaters who first did them. Axel Paulsen of Norway landed the Axel in 1882, the only jump that takes off going forward, which is why a single Axel turns one and a half times in the air. Ulrich Salchow of Sweden gave his name to the Salchow and in 1908 won the first Olympic gold medal in men's figure skating. Curling stones are still cut from granite quarried on Ailsa Craig, a small island off Scotland.
