This snow word search holds the science and the shapes of falling snow: the six-sided snowflake and its crystal, a light flurry, icy sleet, soft pellets of graupel, feathery rime, the avalanche, lake effect storms and the snowpack that melts into spring rivers.
The shape of a snow crystal depends on the air it falls through. In 1936 the Japanese physicist Ukichiro Nakaya grew the first artificial snow crystals in a cold lab at Hokkaido University, and he found that temperature and moisture decide the form: thin plates, needles, columns or the branching stars known as a dendrite. He called snowflakes letters sent from heaven.
Fresh snow is mostly air. On average about ten inches of new snow melts down to one inch of water, though wet snow can run far lower and dry powder far higher. Snow looks white because its many ice surfaces scatter every color of light, and a fresh layer reflects most of the sunlight that reaches it, which is why its albedo keeps snowy ground cold.
