Hot Cocoa Word Search
This hot cocoa word search holds what goes in the mug and where it came from: cacao beans, the Maya and the Aztec, the wooden molinillo that froths it, marshmallow and whipped cream on top, a peppermint stick or a candy cane to stir it, and a warm seat by the fireside.
People drank chocolate long before they ate it. The Maya roasted and ground cacao beans and poured the drink from one vessel to another to raise a foam. The Aztecs often drank it cold and bitter, spiced with chili pepper, and Spanish cooks later added sugar and served it hot. Carl Linnaeus named the cacao tree Theobroma, Greek for food of the gods.
Cocoa powder is a Dutch invention. In 1828 the van Houten family of Amsterdam patented a press that squeezed most of the fat out of cacao, leaving a cake that could be ground into powder, and treating it with alkali made it darker and easier to mix into milk. Hot cocoa is made from that powder, while hot chocolate is made from melted chocolate.
