The first Winter Games were held at Chamonix, France, in 1924, billed at the time as an international winter sports week and only later counted as Olympics. Summer and winter Games shared the same year until 1992; two years later Lillehammer in Norway hosted a Winter Games of its own, and since then the two have taken turns. Norway has won more Winter Olympic medals than any other country.
At Lake Placid in 1980 a team of American college players beat the Soviet Union at hockey in the game called the Miracle on Ice, and the speed skater Eric Heiden won all five of his events. Four years later in Sarajevo, the British ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean earned perfect scores for artistic impression. In 1988 at Calgary, Jamaica sent its first bobsleigh team.
