Judaism Word Search

This Judaism word search holds forty words from Jewish faith and life: the Torah and the Talmud, the synagogue and the rabbi, Shabbat each week, holidays from Passover to Yom Kippur, the shofar, the mezuzah and the bar mitzvah.

Shabbat runs from sunset on Friday to nightfall on Saturday, a day of rest that begins with candles and blessings over wine and challah. The Torah, the five books of Moses, is still copied by hand onto a parchment scroll by a trained scribe, and a single mistake must be fixed before the scroll is read in the synagogue. A mezuzah on the doorpost holds a small parchment with the Shema, the prayer that begins Hear, O Israel.

The Jewish calendar follows both moon and sun, so the holidays move around the ordinary calendar but stay in their seasons. Rosh Hashanah opens the new year in the fall, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, follows ten days later with a full day of fasting. Passover in spring retells the Exodus from Egypt, and matzah is eaten because the Israelites left too quickly for their bread to rise. A boy becomes a bar mitzvah at 13, and a girl a bat mitzvah at 12 or 13.
