This history word search holds forty words for studying the past: the historian and the archive, the primary source and the chronicle, the century, the decade and the era, the manuscript, and the rise and fall of the empire.
The Greek writer Herodotus is often called the father of history. Around 430 BC he wrote the Histories, an account of the wars between the Greeks and the Persians, and the Greek word historia meant inquiry, finding things out by asking. His younger contemporary Thucydides was stricter, and wrote about a war he had fought in himself, the long struggle between Athens and Sparta.
Historians sort evidence into two kinds. A primary source was made at the time, like a diary, a letter, a law or a photograph. A secondary source is written later by someone studying those records. Even the dates have a history. The system of BC and AD was worked out by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus in the year 525, and it has no year zero, so 1 BC is followed directly by AD 1.
