The Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, in what is now Nepal, sometime in the fifth or sixth century BC. Raised as a prince, he left the palace at 29 to look for an answer to suffering. After years of harsh self-denial he chose a middle way between luxury and hunger, and while meditating under a fig tree at Bodh Gaya in India he reached enlightenment. Buddha means the awakened one.
His first teaching set out the Four Noble Truths: life brings suffering, suffering comes from craving, it can end, and the Eightfold Path is the way to end it. Theravada Buddhism is followed today in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Myanmar, and Mahayana in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Many Buddhists keep Vesak on a full moon in spring, usually in May, honoring the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death on a single day.
