Crayola crayons went on sale in 1903, made by Binney and Smith in Pennsylvania. The first box held eight colors and cost a nickel. The name was coined by Alice Binney, a former teacher and the wife of one of the founders, from the French craie, chalk, and oleaginous, oily.
The ballpoint pen was patented in 1938 by Laszlo Biro, a Hungarian newspaper editor who noticed that newspaper ink dried fast and wanted a pen that could use it. Sticky notes came from a glue that did not stick well. Spencer Silver at 3M made the weak adhesive in 1968, and Art Fry used it years later to keep bookmarks from falling out of his church hymnal; the notes reached stores across the country in 1980.
