Homecoming Word Search
This homecoming puzzle runs through the week: spirit week, the pep rally and bonfire, the parade and float, the football game and halftime, the king and queen of the court, and the dance after.
Several schools claim the first homecoming. Baylor held one in 1909, the University of Illinois in 1910, and the University of Missouri in 1911, when its athletic director, Chester Brewer, invited alumni to come home for the football game against Kansas, with a parade and a rally the night before. The idea spread quickly to high schools, where it still brings graduates back each fall.
In Texas the homecoming mum is its own tradition. It began as a real chrysanthemum pinned to a coat, and it has grown into a giant corsage of silk petals, ribbons, bells and trinkets in school colors, some wide enough to cover a student's chest. Boys wear a smaller version, called a garter, on the upper arm.
