Field Day Word Search
This field day puzzle has the whole afternoon outside: the sack race, the relay and baton, the three legged race, the water balloon toss, the hula hoop, the obstacle course and the parachute, plus ribbon and medal at the end.
Field day began as a military term. In the 1700s it meant a day when troops were drilled and reviewed in the open, and by the 1800s it also meant a day of outdoor sports. Schools took it up as a spring tradition, and the old fair races came along: sack races, three legged races and egg and spoon races were all common at English village fetes and church picnics.
Tug of war was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920, with teams of eight pulling for gold. In the United States, school fitness drew national attention in the 1950s, when the Kraus-Weber tests suggested American children were less fit than children in Europe. President Eisenhower set up the President's Council on Youth Fitness in 1956, and schools added more running, jumping and throwing to physical education.
